Dear comrades,
The League for the Fifth International has launched an appeal to raise £5000 to help finance sending a delegation to the World Social Forum in Brazil, the Indonesian Social Forum and to continue our involvement in the European Social Forum process.
We have participated in all three European Social Forums sending large numbers of comrades to Florence, Paris and London. In the last 12 months we have been heavily involved in the preparatory meetings of the London ESF and sent delegations to the preparatory meeting in London, Istanbul, Berlin, Brussels and Paris.
At the London ESF in October 2004 we put forward the idea to the Assembly of the Social Movements the need to establish permanent European co-ordination of the social movements to act as an effective organising centre for struggle at the local, national and continental level.
We also helped organise very successful seminars and meetings between trade unionists from across Europe to discuss a working class response to the neo-liberal attacks across Europe and the growing disillusionment with the social democratic parties - the traditional parties of the working class. We also helped organise a seminar to discuss the plight of Europe's forgotten nationality - the Roma - alongside other organisations form across Europe.
In the many seminars and discussions on the way forward for the movement, we expressed the need for unions, parties and social movements engaged in the ESF process to form a new party. We associated this with the call for a fifth International, spreading and popularising the slogan.
Our comrades alongside the socialist youth organisation Revolution pointed out that the while young people made up a majority of activists on the streets in the antiwar and anticapitalist movements, they were completely absent from the platforms at the ESF. We were instrumental in fighting for a youth assembly which culminated in a meeting of 200 young people which not only discussed the exclusion of youth form the movement but a adopted a declaration calling on the Assembly of the Social Movements to build a campaign of civil disobedience and direct action to halt the European Union's attacks on welfare and workers and then ending of the occupation of Iraq and Palestine.
In 2005 we are planning to mobilise across Europe for the demonstration in Brussels on 19 March against war, racism, and against a neo-liberal Europe, against privatisation. We will also be mobilising for the week of demonstrations and counter conferences around the G8 summit in Scotland in July 2005. We are also intending to send delegations to World Social Forum in Brazil and the Indonesian Social Forum and will maintain our active involvement in the preparations for the next European Social Forum in Athens 2006.
For all this we need your help - both financial and practical.
We are aiming to raise £5000 over the next few months to help us cover the costs of our International work. Any donation you can make, no matter how small, will be of great assistance to us.
You can send cheques payable to WORKERS POWER, marked WSF on the back to BCM Box 7750, London, WC1N 3XX
